Summary

A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

One of the world’s legendary artists and bestselling author of The Creative Habit shares her secrets—from insight to action—for harnessing vitality, finding purpose as you age, and expanding one’s possibilities over the course of a lifetime in her newest New York Times bestseller Keep It Moving

At seventy-eight, Twyla Tharp is revered not only for the dances she makes—but for her astounding regime of exercise and nonstop engagement。 She is famed for religiously hitting the gym each morning at daybreak, and utilizing that energy to propel her breakneck schedule as a teacher, writer, creator, and lecturer。 This book grew out of the question she was asked most frequently: “How do you keep working?”

Keep It Moving is a series of no-nonsense mediations on how to live with purpose as time passes。 From the details of how she stays motivated to the stages of her evolving fitness routine, Tharp models how fulfillment depends not on fortune—but on attitude, possible for anyone willing to try and keep trying。 Culling anecdotes from Twyla’s life and the lives of other luminaries, each chapter is accompanied by a small exercise that will help anyone develop a more hopeful and energetic approach to the everyday。

Twyla will tell you what the beauty-fitness-wellness industry won’t: chasing youth is a losing proposition。 Instead, Keep It Moving focuses you on what’s here and where you’re going—the book for anyone who wishes to maintain their prime for life。

so many excellent ideas in this book to aid us as we age 。。。 highly recommended 。。。 and many of her body routines are now becoming a staple of mine 。。。 thank you, Ms。 Tharp, for sharing your wisdom with us

Important to remember that though she is 80, she has been a professional dancer/athlete her whole life, so her small steps to ignite oomph may be big ones for regular folk。 I like her straightforward voice。 I like her message that it is important to expand, not contract, with age。

Wordy book, but if you need some inspiration to begin a new chapter in your life or try something new I would recommend this book。 It’s a self help book at its basic level

Call this a "coming to terms with aging without giving in" story。 Tharp discusses her own feelings and reactions as her body --the tool with which she's made her living and expressed herself--starts refusing to participate。 Rather than give everything up, she learns new skills and approaches dance in new ways。 In bright, brusque prose, she gives the reader a sharp shake to dislodge assumptions and lazy half-truths。 As a friend said, "I love her bossiness。" Recommended for everyone considering ho Call this a "coming to terms with aging without giving in" story。 Tharp discusses her own feelings and reactions as her body --the tool with which she's made her living and expressed herself--starts refusing to participate。 Rather than give everything up, she learns new skills and approaches dance in new ways。 In bright, brusque prose, she gives the reader a sharp shake to dislodge assumptions and lazy half-truths。 As a friend said, "I love her bossiness。" Recommended for everyone considering how to balance the reality of aging with the desire to continue to do what we love。 。。。more

Part self-help, part memoir, part philosophy。 All good!

Enjoyed her earlier book, the Creative Habit, more。 This one still offers much food for thought, though, and worth the read。 She is, what my father would have called, “one tough cookie。” Not sure I would have enjoyed her company or supervision as much as her words of wisdom。

Meg Deere

A few of the chapters are quite silly and trite, but like her other two books, her insights are simple, logical and spot on for those who make anything。

Christina

Inspirational and fun。

I continue to work as I always have, expecting each day to build on the one before。 -Twyla Tharpe

Some nuggets of advice stood out more than the others - if you don’t work for your body, your body won’t work for you。 Anyone can dance。 Others were mostly variations of what I have read before。 It is a really good pep talk for older folks and she is a great example of how being physically active keeps you healthy。

Not your typical “use it or lose it” book; this one is more about adapting to the changes that come with age。 Ms。 Tharp peppers her advice with numerous anecdotes from other peoples’ lives to illustrate her meaning。 One hundred seventy-nine pages of larger print make this a quick read。

Jill Diaz

Timeless advice for creatives。

Library Book。。。 Uplifting and positive thoughts on aging

I didn't finish it, it looks like a good book but I wasn't in the mood to read it。 I didn't finish it, it looks like a good book but I wasn't in the mood to read it。 。。。more

Twyla is amazing at 76。 I love the way she structured the book。 If she can commit to the regimen she favors, so can I。

Keep it Moving is an apt title for a book written by one of the foremost movers and shakers in the contemporary dance scene。 The title could well be this septuagenarian’s mantra for Tharp is in no way ready to slow down the pace of her personal training regimen nor of her work creating new and innovative choreography in the dance world。 I’ll admit that at first I was a bit put off by what felt to me like a sometimes Type A tone, but over the course of the book, I was won over by her intense crea Keep it Moving is an apt title for a book written by one of the foremost movers and shakers in the contemporary dance scene。 The title could well be this septuagenarian’s mantra for Tharp is in no way ready to slow down the pace of her personal training regimen nor of her work creating new and innovative choreography in the dance world。 I’ll admit that at first I was a bit put off by what felt to me like a sometimes Type A tone, but over the course of the book, I was won over by her intense creative spirit and her passionate love for what she does。 And though my own life practice in movement has been yoga, I have also done some dance, music and other creative arts, and I can fully agree with Tharp that moving the body, creating stamina and moving forward with a practice even well into old age are all important parts of a fulfilling and successful creative life of any kind。 。。。more

This books gets better as you read on。 I particularly liked Chapter 11 - Stronger for the Mending, which really resonated with me。

Life lessons I should have learned from the mother who wasn't really there。 Had I grown up with these, I would have more confidence in myself today。 Never too late to be told these simple truths。 Shared it with my sister。 Life lessons I should have learned from the mother who wasn't really there。 Had I grown up with these, I would have more confidence in myself today。 Never too late to be told these simple truths。 Shared it with my sister。 。。。more

I expected this to be an autobiography but it's just another "motivational" book。 I had hoped to glean insights into the challenges of dance and choreography and the life lessons to be found in movement。 Ms。 Tharp does provide life lessons; each chapter is devoted to one。 But the lessons are so basic - - Choose to act。 Don't just sit there。 Move。 Be positive。 Protect your energy level as you age。 Exercise。 Keep reaching。 Sigh。 I was seeking so much more from this book。 I had the privilege of see I expected this to be an autobiography but it's just another "motivational" book。 I had hoped to glean insights into the challenges of dance and choreography and the life lessons to be found in movement。 Ms。 Tharp does provide life lessons; each chapter is devoted to one。 But the lessons are so basic - - Choose to act。 Don't just sit there。 Move。 Be positive。 Protect your energy level as you age。 Exercise。 Keep reaching。 Sigh。 I was seeking so much more from this book。 I had the privilege of seeing Twyla Tharp and Mikhail Baryshnikov dance together in 1992, still one of the most memorable theatrical performances in my life。 Ms。 Tharp was 51 years old at the time。 Now, she's 79。 I would have appreciated more stories on how she has built her stamina and resilience, and a lot fewer truisms。 。。。more

I'm taking advice on work, health and aging from a 79-year-old dancer because she is tough and probably in much better shape than I'll ever be。 I'm taking advice on work, health and aging from a 79-year-old dancer because she is tough and probably in much better shape than I'll ever be。 。。。more

Well I tried, but when she said jump she lost me。 Just kidding, 。。。mmmShe does give you some moves but her inspirational stories stuck to me more than any movement。 If the mind says to move, you do。 At 74 she staged a tour of 44 performances in 10 cities over 66 days, those numbers just have to impress, this is a force。 Your not going to become a dancer but you just might be inspired by reading about Twyla Tharp。The book did get misplaced for a little while, it’s a thin。

Tharp and I are the same age so a lot of what she said really struck home for me。 For instance, stand tall and learn to fall。 I enjoyed her personal vignettes as well as the suggested exercises to increase mobility。 In sum: don’t stop。
